Recent Trends in Operations Centers

Change is a constant, especially in the world of technology. When it comes to mission critical, it’s important to make a distinction between trends in operations centers that have staying power, and trends that are fleeting. It can be hard to know the difference, which is why Constant is here to help you.

Here are some recent trends in operations centers with the potential to see continued growth:

More data sources to monitor

There’s no shortage of data points to be monitored in an operations center. There are countless video streams and information sources to monitor from AI, Internet of Things (IoT) and more. And believe it or not, the number of data sources only continues to grow. One key area that’s expanding is the IoB (Internet of Behavior). The IoB is information about internet users’ online behaviors and preferences. This tracking of user behaviors provides not only a source for analysis but also for predictive analytics on how to influence certain outcomes.

Regardless of what your operations center monitors, one thing is clear: the data sources continue to grow both in breadth and in depth.

Increased use of AI in tandem with the human element

With all these different kinds of data to monitor, it could be overwhelming for operators. An operations center could receive hundreds of alerts every day that are not all relevant to their mission.  Machine learning helps ensure your analysts only get the signals that they need rather than being overloaded with information. With the help of AI, situational awareness can quickly turn into real action as only the most relevant information is passed on. This is an element of control room operation that will only continue to grow.

In tandem with artificial intelligence, the “human element” plays a crucial role in following up and investigating the relevant alerts. AI and machine learning augment and enhance the capabilities of human analysis, but don’t replace them. Figuring out how best to enable the technology to help and not hinder your analysts can be a significant challenge in setting up a security operations center. A video wall is one of the best ways to empower human analysts to work well with the technology that’s been put in place.

LED catching up to LCD

In the past, LED video walls have not been as common in operations center environments as LCD video walls, mainly because of pixel pitch, the distance between the center of two pixels on an LED video wall panel. The lower the pixel pitch, the higher the resolution that will fit into the same area.

Previously, many LED walls could not provide the same resolution as an LCD video wall of the same size. Lately, however, LED video walls with denser pixel pitch have been developed, making LED walls a more viable option for data-dense operations centers.

LCD video walls are still a common choice for 24/7 monitoring centers, but we can expect a rise in LED walls as well.
