The phrase “command center” may not bring to mind an image of a room in a hospital. However, innovative hospitals have begun to embrace the advantages they can gain from a command center, ushering in a new era of patient care.

Benefits of a Command Center in Healthcare

The ability for rapid communication and real-time data monitoring is vital in  an environment when a matter of seconds can make a life-changing difference. Creating a centralized digital center for your hospital can serve a variety of purposes and allow your staff to focus more time and attention on what matters most: the patients.

A central command center’s potential to improve patient care is multifaceted: with continuous digital monitoring, hospital staff can track incoming ambulances, streamline arrival, monitor status of operating rooms, and track patient movement. By taking advantage of the type of data that can be displayed on video wall systems, hospitals can use command centers to ensure that they make the most of their available space and to improve the patient experience. As an example, the Johns Hopkins Hospital uses a command center to optimize their capacity and monitor patient flow.

Centralized clinical command centers that bring together employees from various hospital departments also contribute to improved collaboration across all aspects of hospital management. AdventHealth, one of Constant’s command center clients, combines teams such as Clinical Admission Status Team, Transfer Center, Patient Financial Services, Flight and Dispatch, Transport/Environmental Services, and more in their Mission Control.

By connecting departments within a single space, important processes can be streamlined and more effectively implemented. Furthermore, a command center helps to facilitate efficient coordination among a hospital system’s multiple campuses or with other regional medical centers.

Handling Hospital Logistics Through Command Centers

Hospitals oversee a surprising amount of logistics to enable their primary objective of patient care. “In many ways, hospitals are mini logistics companies that continuously move large volumes of material among labs, pharmacies, pantries and administrative units,” said Deloitte in their report on “The Hospital of the Future: How Digital Technologies Can Change Hospitals Globally.” Other logistics such as vital deliveries to the hospital can also be monitored via a video wall system.

The details involved in hospital management are complex, and the use of a customized command center could assist in simplifying solutions for operators. Organizations in other industries with complex logistics have installed command centers to assist in their operations – from fleet operations centers to freight logistics centers – and healthcare could benefit by following a similar path.

Video Walls for Healthcare Command Centers

The focal point of a mission critical space, the command center video wall, can display a number of sources relevant to your intended use of the space. From admission software data to operating room scheduling and electronic health records, the options are nearly limitless. For example, the Intensive Care Unit at Cleveland Clinic has used their clinical command center’s data wall to display each patient’s vital signs and risk status so operators can monitor all patients, stay ahead of potential alerts, and intervene swiftly when necessary.

According to a Deloitte report on future technology in hospitals, “comprehensive, real-time patient data at the point of care can improve patient outcomes, which means that sharing standardized data is likely to be part of future care delivery.” No matter the use you plan for your mission critical video wall, Constant can help. As systems integrators, Constant chooses from among the best technologies to assemble an AV system that perfectly suits your requirements and supports all the sources you need.

There are multiple potential uses for a clinical command center. In addition to the possibilities mentioned above, a data wall system installed in a hospital command center can be used to track and prevent data breaches. In addition, these command centers can also be used to monitor social media for any feedback on the hospital experience, which can then be used to make improvements. Whatever the planned use of your hospital’s centralized operations center, the organization and improved workflows made possible by adopting mission critical technology facilitate quick and well-informed decisions.

Command Centers in Healthcare Created by Constant

In collaboration with our partners at GE Health, Constant Technologies helped AdventHealth in Florida create their Mission Control. The 60 tile monitors that make up the video wall, integrated by Constant, take in 500k messages per day. Mission Control uses the video wall to display data that helps operators understand patterns and dynamics for better preparation across the board. This results in shorter wait times for patients, improved clinical care, and more efficient transfers and placements for a “whole care” experience.

In 2018, Tampa General Hospital soft-launched their CareComm command center, the center of their hospital system created with GE Healthcare’s artificial intelligence technology and video walls from Constant Technologies. The command center spans 8,000 square feet and features a large central display wall made up of 38 wall-mounted LCD screens. The operators in the facility monitor 20 separate AI applications to allow them to more efficiently run the operations of the hospital. In the time since its launch in 2018 to 2020, Tampa General saved over $40 million due to CareComm’s reduction of system-wide inefficiencies and reduced the average length of stay in the hospital by half a day –  eliminating 20,000 excess patient days. The data says it all: patients are receiving more effective, efficient care.
