Access to real-time data is more critical than ever.
Dataminr and Forrester Consulting partnered to evaluate risk management practices of over 400 security and risk professionals from leading global organizations. 82% of those surveyed reported that they recognize that real-time information is a core component of risk management. What’s less consistent, though, is knowing what to do with that data.
Have a good understanding of what makes data real-time
According to Forrester’s research, a majority of information perceived to be “real time” is outdated. Many organizations are looking at information that is a month old or even more. While it is important to take general trends into account for certain types of reporting, when it comes to real time data, organizations need to use the most recent possible data. In addition, the timeliness of the data must align with the purpose you plan to use it for.
Ultimately, the role of real time information in an operations center is to give you the absolute earliest possible indication that an event is unfolding which may matter to you, and to give you updates as it unfolds. The more people who have the right information at the right time, the better your team is equipped to respond to situations.
Use real time information to take action
Real-time information can make risk management efforts actionable. The challenge, however, is the ability to use that data to act. If real time data isn’t shared, then it isn’t truly actionable. According to the survey, only ⅓ of respondents are using real-time data to inform how they respond to an incident.
That doesn’t necessarily mean that the information isn’t being used. A lot of organizations use real time data to monitor, to assess risk, and to conduct impact analyses. While these are all important tasks, the data also needs to be used to take action and respond in the moment. The true value of real time information comes from being able to inform decisions when even seconds can make a difference.
Real time data analysis benefits from an operations center
Only 35% of respondents to the survey reported that they had a common location where they register risks, or a common language to discuss that risk.
Access to real time data would not be effective without an efficient, organized way to put it into action.
Command centers combine data into one hub that creates situational awareness. Large video walls within these command and control spaces contribute to operator awareness and collaboration by displaying real-time data from every relevant source in a way that is visible to everyone in the room. With conscious design the audiovisual setup can also share data with other relevant locations, whether that’s an adjacent conference room or a second operations center at a separate site.
In addition to the video wall technology that can display a wide variety of sources, operational efficiency hinges on managing the flow and control of data. Video wall processors and control systems can assist with this. In the management of mission critical data, it’s vital to define the types of information you will need, how you will gather and analyze it, and how you will manage and share the information.
