Designing for Mission Critical During COVID-19

Getting back to work is a top priority across the multitude of sectors and organizations affected by COVID-19. But even more important than business continuity is ensuring the health and safety of workers. Constant Technologies is adapting our design strategies to ensure current and future mission critical operations centers comply with the changes brought by COVID-19.

The open office concept, developed to foster a more collaborative environment, is proving difficult to modify given the challenges presented by COVID-19. In a recent Wall Street Journal Article, Harris Diamond, chief executive and chairman of McCann Worldgroup said “All our agencies are open floor plans and that was a great idea in the past, but it now works against us.” Because many operations centers are designed with open collaboration as a main focus, the rules of social distancing can present a new challenge.

Adapted Existing Operations Centers

Constant is currently engineering personal partitions which will assist in current operations center applications. This will also become an important aspect of consoles for future operations center projects. These clear partitions will be available in a range of styles and will be helpful in enforcing social distancing. Partitions also help to prevent the spread of airborne viruses and germs.  As many operations centers must remain operation 24/7. Constant is working to quickly assist our clients with solutions that will help adhere to new protocol.

Design Considerations

There are also certain sectors that are working to ramp up their operations center plans.  These organizations need to implement new mission critical command and control facilities as a response to COVID-19. “We are working on new projects in sectors such as healthcare and emergency operations,” says Heather Conover, project manager at Constant Technologies. “The designs we are developing are taking social distancing and operator safety into account, responding real time to the changing needs of our clients.”

Constant is designing new operations center spaces where social distancing protocol is being taken into consideration. The Constant Technologies design team is working with clients to develop layouts giving additional separation between users.  This can be used for additional storage or converted into additional operator space for future consideration when rules are relaxed.
